CELEBRATING ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
Posted by: eBlast

From: Anna Maria Chávez, National CEO Date: May 1, 2012 Diversity and inclusion have been core elements of our Movement from the moment Juliette Gordon Low brought together the first Girl Scouts a century ago. So it is with a special sense of pride during our centennial that we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and honor the many generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who helped shape our nation's history and enrich our society. Girl Scouts of Asian and Pacific Island heritage have greatly contributed to the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better. Just five years after Daisy Low founded our Movement, the first Girl Scout troops were organized in the territory of Hawai'i. In fact, the last reigning Hawaiian monarch, Queen Lili'uokalani, was an original sponsor. Today, Asian and Pacific Americans are involved in all aspects of our Movement from the National Board of Directors to volunteers and staff at local councils. Like their peers, they are committed to ensuring that all girls throughout our country have the best leadership experiences. As a result, girls from the many diverse Asian and Pacific Island cultures are finding a home in Girl Scouting. Throughout the month of May, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds will take time to reflect on and celebrate the many achievements of Asian Pacific Americans. I hope you will join them in celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

A MESSAGE FROM GSUSA’s CEO
Posted by: eBlast

Dear Girl Scout Member,
Since becoming chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of the USA, I have made it a priority to engage the White House on key Girl Scout initiatives and to advocate on behalf of our Movement. In particular, we have sought to gain national recognition for our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, and National President Connie L. Lindsey submitted a nomination for her to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation?s highest civilian honor. I am proud to report that President Barack Obama announced today that he will posthumously bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Juliette Gordon Low.
This marks a special moment in our history, for it was Daisy Low and her remarkable vision of "something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world" that set in motion a movement - the Girl Scout Movement. How fitting that this singular honor should come in 2012, almost exactly 100 years after she gathered those first 18 Girl Scouts. Today, there are 59 million of us who have worn the Girl Scout uniform or been part of Girl Scouting in some way. All of us owe Daisy Low a debt of gratitude, and we should rejoice at the news that her indelible contributions to the lives of girls will be recognized by a grateful nation when the President formally presents the award in late spring.
Juliette Gordon Low, as all of us in Girl Scouting know, was a great and visionary woman, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom is a testament to her enduring legacy and the place Girl Scouting holds in the fabric of the American experience.
With warmest regards, Anna Maria Chávez Chief Executive Officer Girl Scouts of the USA

TAKE ACTION PROJECTS, SERVICE PROJECTS, and AWARDS
Posted by: eBlast

Take Action Projects and Service Projects Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Two of the ways girls make the world a better place is by completing service projects and Take Action projects. These projects are defined differently.
Take Action Projects empower girls to make a difference in their communities, open their eyes to a bigger world, and can inspire others to get involved and make a difference. Girls experience Take Action projects through the Journeys and, for Juniors and above, by completing the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Award projects. Take Action projects address the root cause of a problem, are done with the community, and are designed to create a lasting difference in the community.
Service projects are defined as projects that are done for the community and meet a onetime community need. An example of a service project is a collection of food items for the local food pantry.
When girls are choosing their Take Action projects for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards, please challenge them to think beyond service project ideas. Examples of Take Action projects are found in THE girl guidelines for each award and covered at the Award Workshops and Orientations.
Money Earning Also, when a girl is planning her award project, please remind her that, as a Girl Scout, she cannot raise money for another organization. She can plan an additional money-earning project which will help with project expenses; however, she cannot raise money that is given directly to another organization. Silver Award Notice of Intent An additional form for the Silver Award was added in Fall 2011. A Silver Award Notice of Intent Form is now required to be submitted before a girl begins her Silver Award Take Action Project. This form, along with all girl and adult award guidelines, can be found on our website. With questions on these or other award topics, please contact Lynn or Jeri.

FORECASTING YOUR TROOP’S FUTURE
Posted by: eBlast

This month we have started distributing the Troop Forecasting Form that is due back to your CDM by June 15. The information you provide about your interest in continuing as well as what the girls are interested in doing next year helps the service team plan. There's also a place to let us know other adults who you suggest for future troop leadership teams.
As girls get older, they may be ready to re-define their Girl Scout pathways, and regroup to meet their schedules and lifestyles better. Your service unit team can help provide ideas and orchestrate some re-organization if that is what's needed.
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience you have facilitated for your girls has been Fun with Purpose ? the activities and being girl-led, learning-by-doing, and cooperative. Now is the time for both you and them to determine how they would like to continue developing courage, confidence, and character, and making the world a better place! Let?s keep girls in Girl Scouting ? and continue to equip them with a strong sense of self, their critical thinking skills, and a peer group that reinforces positive values and healthy relationships.

GIRLS SURVEY
Posted by: eBlast

This month's eNewsletter invites all girls to tell us about their Girl Scout experiences in two or three surveys that will take place over the course of a year. Parental consent is required for girls under 13 years old. The first 1,000 girls who register by May 1 and complete the first survey that will be emailed to them in May will receive a special Girl Scout tee shirt.
The confidential information, along with the information that comes from the annual Troop Leader Summary and Evaluation (that leaders are asked to complete between May 15-June 15), is becoming increasingly important so we can measure how Girl Scouting is benefiting girls and how we can make it even more beneficial.
Please encourage your girls and their parents to participate by going to www.GirlScoutVoices.org. The online survey is available in English and Spanish. Paper copies and return envelopes are also available by contacting Cathy Ramage at ext. 3747.

When girls are choosing their Take Action projects for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards, please challenge them to think beyond service project ideas. Examples of Take Action projects are found in each award's girl guidelines and covered at the award workshops and orientations. Money Earning When girls are planning their award projects, please remind them that, as a Girl Scout, they cannot raise money for another organization. They can plan an additional money-earning project, which will help with project expenses. However, they cannot raise money that is given directly to another organization.
Silver Award Notice of Intent Form An additional form for the Silver Award was added in the fall of 2011. A Silver Award Notice of Intent form is now required to be submitted before a girl begins her Silver Award Take Action project. This form and all girl guidelines can be found on our website. Adult award information is also available on our website. With questions on these or other award topics, please contact Lynn or Jeri.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS FROM ABC BAKERS
Posted by: eBlast

On the 100th Birthday of Girl Scouting, we celebrate a century of empowering girls.
On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low gathered a group of 18 girls together in Savannah, Georgia. Since that first meeting, millions of girls have benefited from your mission of building "girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place."
The history of Girl Scouting continues to be written today by girls all over the ocuntry. To celebrate this special centennial for Girl Scouting, ABC has collected photographs from councils across America to create a unique visual commemoration. Click here to see our 100th Birthday video.
All of us at ABC Bakers wish Girl Scouts a happy 100th birthday. Thank you for letting us be a part of your rich and life-changing history.
