Dear Service Unit and Troop Volunteers,
As the annual Cookie Sales Program across the country continues to gain momentum, it is not unusual for Girl Scouts to be in the media spotlight for more than cookies. As a beloved American institution, Girl Scouts can be a natural target for those seeking to draw attention to themselves or their cause. With the advent of social media added to the mix, sometimes the rumor-mill swirl is at work more quickly than ever.
I want to assure you that we are committed to being proactive and responsive. In addition, we keep our staff updated on accurate vs. inaccurate stories with details confirmed from Girl Scouts of the USA in our effort to keep Service Unit volunteers informed.
With more than 5,000 volunteers in our jurisdiction alone, we realize that people may ask you for your insight. I want to be sure that you have support on a few key talking points as well as a referral system for when questions arise for which you don't have answers or for which you are uncomfortable answering.
Attached is a Q & A that provides accurate responses to some of the repeat questions we received over the past week due to national news and special-interest blogs. It's unfortunate that some organizations choose to use a boycott that negatively impacts both our girls and our services that we offer to them. As volunteers, I hope this Q & A gives you additional insights should you be asked by your local parents or community members.
As we celebrate our 100th Anniversary and look towards our future, let's remember that our core principle of inclusion is inspired by Juliette Gordon Low's commitment to welcome all girls. Similarly, the attached answers are rooted in the longstanding beliefs documented in the Girl Scout Law, the Congressional Charter of Girl Scouts of the USA, and the Preamble to the Constitution of Girl Scouts of the USA.

The 2012 Girl Scout Cookie Program is underway. Please work with your Service Unit Cookie Manager in meeting the second deadline date - February 1 - to have the following information submitted:
? Troop Base Proceeds (if you are an older Girl Scout troop - Cadette, Senior or Ambassador ? you need to let your SUCM know if your troop has opted out of the recognitions and your girls have chosen the $.43 or $.48 per package)
? Initial Cookie Order and Early Recognition have been committed
? If you have more than 200 cases, delivery station information form filled out correctly.
Encourage the girls to continue taking orders. If you need more Girl Order Cards, contact your SUCM.
Goal Getter Patch
Please continue to encourage your girls to set up (and update) their Goal Getter activity and to send out the e-cards to family and friends.
Cookie Kiosk
Cookie Kiosk is open for first-come, first served selections (two assigned per day per troop). What you see is what is available.

ABC DOES NOT HAVE A NEW COOKIE IN THEIR PRODUCT LINE-UP THSI YEAR. There are two cookie companies in the United States licensed by Girl Scouts of the USA to sell cookies (Little Brownie Baker and ABC/Interbake Foods). The company that both South Carolina councils use is ABC Bakers and they are not offering a new cookie this year. Our cookie line-up is still Thanks A Lot, Shout Outs, Lemonades, Shortbread, Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties, Carmel deLites and Peanut Butter Sandwiches. If a customer requests the Savannah Smiles, let them know that cookie is offered by another cookie company and talk about our delicious Lemonades variety.
What is new with cookies? In celebration of our 100th Anniversary, ABC repackaged the Shortbread cookie with a commemorative logo and photo. It was the first Girl Scout cookie ever sold in 1917.

Furman University Women?s Basketball ? Come support the Lady Paladins as they take on Samford at 4:00 PM on Saturday, February 18. All Girl Scouts will be admitted free of charge if they wear something indicating they are a Girl Scout. All others accompanying the Girl Scout can purchase tickets for $3 at the door. This is also Furman?s breast cancer awareness game so everyone is also encouraged to wear something pink. If you are planning to attend, please email Lynn Arve with your troop number along with number of girls and adults attending. That will help us give an estimate to the coaching staff of how many people to expect.

Clemson Women's Basketball Girl Scouts Day - Sunday, January 29th at 4 PM vs. Georgia Tech. Admission is free for all Girl Scouts. Those accompanying the Girl Scouts may purchase tickets for $3 each. Girl Scouts receive a free tour of the women's locker room and meet the players. Arrive an hour and a half (2:30 PM) before the game starts for the pregame walk through. Coaches will give them scouting report of the game. There will be time to shoot around in the practice court after players leave. Free autographs post-game.
*Pregame walk through begins at 2:30 PM in the annex gym of Littlejohn Coliseum.
*Arrive a little before 2:30 PM at the loading tunnel on Avenue of Champions, there will be someone to escort you to the practice court.

USC-Upstate Women's Softball Game - Cheer on the team as they take on Detroit in the Upstate Classic Tournament on the campus of USC-Upstate. The game begins at 4 PM on Saturday, February 11. This event is open to troops, individually-registered girls and all family members. Admission is free as long as you pre-register either online or by using the Individual or Troop Event Registration form. Registration closes February 3, 2012. After the game, the girls will be able to meet the team and get their autographs.
Wofford Women's Basketball - For all remaining home games this season, girl members will be admitted free of charge and any persons accompanying the Girl Scouts will be admitted for $5. Girl Scouts should wear something indicating that they are a Girl Scout to be admitted free. Click for a game schedule.
Forest City Owls Baseball Girl Scout Night/Sleepover at the Ballpark - June 1, 2012
Girl Scout Night/Sleepover includes: pre-game parade around the ball field; opportunity for Girl Scouts to join Owls players on the field while the National Anthem is being sung; and reserved seating area so everyone can sit together. Girl Scouts can participate in the on-field activities during the game.
Hotdog, chips and a drink are included in the overnight ticket price. After the game, run the bases, get player autographs, enjoy fireworks, watch a movie, sleep in tents on the outfield area, and have breakfast in the morning with Owls players. All girl members will receive a Forest City Owls Girl Scout Patch. The cost for this event is $15.00 per Girl Scout and/or adult.

ABC IS NOT OFFERING A NEW COOKIE THIS YEAR
Two cookie companies in the United States are licensed by Girl Scouts of the USA to bake Girl Scout cookies: Little Brownie Bakers and ABC/Interbake Foods. Both South Carolina councils (GSSC-MM and Girl Scouts of Eastern SC) contract with ABC Bakers, who is NOT offering a new cookie this year. Prices are the same as last year at $3.50 per box.
New this year is the packaging for Shortbread cookies. It celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts as a tribute to the original homebaked Girl Scout cookie first sold in 1917 to raise money for Girl Scout troops and their communities.
Encourage your customers! If they're a lemon cookie fan, we have Lemonades, savory slices of shortbread with a refreshingly tangy lemon icing. If they're a Shout Outs fan, buy them this year because they'll be replaced by a new cookie in 2013. The other cookie varieties we are selling are the ever-popular Thin Mints, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Thanks-A-Lot, and Shortbread.

USC-Upstate Women?s Basketball Game and Girl Scout 100th Anniversary Celebration ? Cheer for the team as they take on Belmont at the Hodge Center on the campus of USC-Upstate. The game begins at 4:30 PM on Saturday, January 21, 2012. This event is open to troops, individually-registered girls, and all family members. Girl Scouts and Troop Leaders will be admitted free if they wear a badge, sash, full uniform, or other clothing identifying them as members. Tickets price for all others attending with the Girl Scout members are $1 for persons under 18 and $4 per persons 18 and over, paid at the door. All Girl Scouts present will be recognized on the court at half-time!

It's time to prepare your troop for our statewide South Carolina Reducing Plastic Waste Take Action Project so they are ready to begin on February 1. Girl Scouts across America are being asked to do at least one of the three projects and take the Girl Scouts Forever Green (GSFG) Pledge. Attached to this eBlast are our council?s project planning recommendations. Cards and stickers are being distributed by the Service Unit Cookie Managers or at your January Service Unit Meeting. Want some outdoor fun this winter? Sapphire Ski Resort has what you're looking for! Stay the whole day or just a few hours - the day is yours to plan. Something New About You for grades 3-5
This Girlology workshop is a great way for girls and their moms to begin a discussion that will ease the transition into puberty. Through very interactive activities and discussions, this workshop offers age-appropriate, medically-accurate information about puberty, including growth and development, nutrition, exercise, skin care, hygiene, and of course, menstruation and menstrual hygiene products. Girls may arrive feeling embarrassed and nervous, but they always leave laughing and excited. This class does not cover sex or reproduction. Each girl will receive the book, Something New About You, at the workshop. For more information, visit www.girlology.com. Each girl must be accompanied by her mother or other influential woman in her life. Because this event is being funded by the Mary Black Foundation, girls residing in Spartanburg County are able to attend at a reduced fee. Registration deadline is Friday, 1 week prior to session.

Come to Clemson University and celebrate National Engineering Week with the young women from the Women In Science and Engineering (W.I.S.E.) program. Girls in 6th-12th grades will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and explore the various fields of science and engineering. Lunch is included. | SLEEP-IN and SLEEP-OUT ADULT LEARNING! |

HURRY! A great opportunity to take Sleep-In and Sleep-Out is coming up quickly! Sleep-In is scheduled for Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 6:00 PM at the Columbia Service Center. This session is required before taking the Sleep-Out training.
Sleep-Out is scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, January 14-15, 2012, beginning at 9:00 AM, at Camp Kinard. Camp Kinard is located at 6053 Two Notch Road, Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29070. Overnight accommodations will be in heated cottages with bunk beds and indoor bathrooms. The cost of the training is $18.00. Participants will prepare Saturday lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast as part of the training. Please register for these trainings through our website (in eCouncil) as soon as possible. Questions? 2012 is going to be a Girl Scout year to remember. The national media kick-off of The Year of the Girl will be on January 31 in New York City, and on February 1 in Washington, DC. To demonstrate our collective power in the state, all our troops are being asked to do the Reducing Plastic Waste Project in February. Bridging to the Next Century Celebrations
More information will be available in January, but in the meantime we are encouraging all troops to plan to attend one of the several Bridging to the Next Century Celebrations being planned for in/around March. As details unfold, registration information will be distributed via eBlast and posted on our 100th Anniversary space on our council website. So far we have confirmed the following celebrations will be taking place. All Girl Scouts in the state are welcome to attend any of the celebrations. USC-Upstate Women's Basketball - Cheer for the team as they take on Belmont at the Hodge Center on the campus of USC-Upstate. The game begins at 4:30 PM on Saturday, January 21, 2012. This event is open to troops, individually registered girls, and all family members. Girl Scouts will be admitted free if they wear a badge, sash, full uniform, or other clothing identifying them as girl members. Tickets price for all others attending with the girl member will $4 per person, paid at the door. No need to pre-register: just pay at the door on the 21st for a fun time of Spartan basketball.
Greenville Road Warriors Hockey Game ? Girl Scout Night will be held Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 4:05 PM at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville. All Girl Scouts and their families are eligible for discounted tickets and the girls are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Ticket prices are $6, $9, or $14, depending on seating location. Cookie Dough cannot be used to pay the ticket price for this community resource activity. All Girl Scouts who participate will be given a special patch by the Road Warriors team. Something New About You for grades 3-5. This Girlology workshop is a great way for girls and their moms to begin a discussion that will ease the transition into puberty. Through very interactive activities and discussions, this workshop offers age-appropriate, medically-accurate information about puberty, including growth and development, nutrition, exercise, skin care, hygiene, and of course, menstruation and menstrual hygiene products. Girls may arrive feeling embarrassed and nervous, but they always leave laughing and excited. This class does not cover sex or reproduction. Each girl will receive the book, Something New About You, at the workshop. For more information, visit www.girlology.com. Each girl must be accompanied by her mother or other influential woman in her life. Because this event is being funded by the Mary Black Foundation, girls residing in Spartanburg County are able to attend at a reduced fee. Registration deadline is Friday, 1 week prior to session. HURRY! A great opportunity to take Sleep-In and Sleep-Out is coming up quickly! Sleep-In is scheduled for Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 6:00 PM at the Columbia Service Center. This session is required before taking the Sleep-Out training.
Sleep-Out is scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, January 14-15, 2012, beginning at 9:00 AM, at Camp Kinard. Camp Kinard is located at 6053 Two Notch Road, Batesburg-Leesville, SC 29070. Overnight accommodations will be in heated cottages with bunk beds and indoor bathrooms. The cost of the training is $18.00. Dear Girl Scouts:
You are invited to apply for the Girls' World Forum (GWF) to be held in Chicago, IL, July 12-16, 2012. Each Girl Scout Council may send two girls to the event. The girls selected to attend must be:
> a registered girl member ages 14 to 18 at the time of the Forum
> actively engaged in our Girl Scout Council
> interested in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG)
> willing to develop skills and networks to bring about change in their community and country
> fluent in English, Arabic, French or Spanish (to contribute and benefit fully from the Forum).
The Girls' World Forum is the third and final event in a series of forums that are part of the WAGGG?s global centenary celebrations. The World Forums, hosted by Girl Guiding UK in 2010 and the World Centers in 2011, have already engaged over 250 young women in discussions of the WAGGGS Global Action Theme, girls worldwide say "Together We Can Change Our World," which address the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
GWF 2012 will focus on three millennium goals: MDG 1: to end poverty and hunger, MDG 3: to promote gender equality and empower women, and MDG 7: to achieve environmental sustainability.
The Forum will include the following elements:
> Exchange with external partners
> Develop advocacy, leadership & communication skills
> Identify viable solutions to MDG issues and incorporate them into designs of personal action plans.
> Participate in local take action projects
> Review and incorporate Member Organizations 2010 and 2011 Forum action plans
> Centenary celebrations
Girl Scouts of South Carolina-Mountains to Midlands will contribute $500 toward the $650 registration fee from the proceeds from the Fall Product Sale. This registration fee includes food, accommodations and all activity and program costs throughout the Forum. The $500 council scholarship is only available to a girl once per calendar year, so if it is used toward a destination fee in 2012, it would not be available for this event. Each girl selected would be responsible for the difference in their registration fee, the cost of travel to the Forum and personal spending money. We anticipate the total cost to the girls, including incidentals, to be about $400-$600 but will vary based on airfare and unaccompanied minor fees, if applicable.
Cookie Dough may be used toward the registration fee. Also, Financial Assistance, based on need, up to $300 may be requested to participate in this event. More details on financial assistance will be available after the selection process is complete. In addition, the girls chosen for this trip would have the opportunity to apply for the Lillian Holley Martin Travel Fund which helps cover up to $250 for costs associated with Girl Scout travel for one girl from the council each calendar year.
Applications are due to the council by 5:30 PM on January 6, 2012. Girls will travel to the Forum on their own, but we will work to coordinate travel plans with the two girls selected. Girl Scouts around the country are making preparations to celebrate girls, Juliette Low, and bridging to the next 100 years of Girl Scouting. The year-long celebration, launching in Washington, DC and New York City on January 31 and February 1, runs through March 2013. Here in our council, teams of local Girl Scout volunteers and community partners are putting together plans for our local celebrations which will begin our local launch of the Year of the Girl during the first few days of February.
Soon we will have a special place on our website where you can go to see all of our 100th Anniversary-related activities as the information becomes available. Meanwhile, here is some confirmed information:
Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina's Bridging to the Next Century Celebration is March 10, 2012. They are using the Cooper River Bridge and Mt. Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. Deadline to register is January 15. Visit www.girlscoutsesc.org for registration information. Our council's cookie dough may be used for all or a portion of the registration fee.
The Columbia Area Bridging to the Next Century Celebration is March 10, 2012. We are using the Gervais Street Bridge and the area around the State Museum. Watch for more details about this bridging event and others being planned throughout our council.
Information about our Girl Scouts Forever Green - Reducing Plastic Waste Take Action Project throughout the month of February will be in FOCALPoint. Join other Girl Scouts from throughout the state and learn how our state government works, right at the place where it happens! Assist State Senator and Representative lawmakers as they take action. Deadline for the application has been extended to November 30 and is now open to 9th graders! All applications must be sent to Lynn Arve.

Stuff that Matters
This Girlology workshop gives girls in grades 6 and 7 the knowledge and confidence they need so they can face the milestones and challenges ahead. This mom-daughter workshop begins with an entertaining and informative review of the late stages of puberty (focusing on skin care, menstruation and menstrual hygiene products) and reviews some often-misunderstood facts about sex. Each girl will receive the book, Stuff That Matters, at the workshop. For more information visit www.girlology.com. Each girl must be accompanied by her mother or other influential woman in her life. This workshop is limited to 20 mother-daughter pairs, so sign up soon to get your spot! Because this event is being funded by the Mary Black Foundation, girls residing in Spartanburg County are able to attend at a reduced fee. Cost:
$2.50/girls and adults, Spartanburg County residents
$32.50/girl; $2.50/adult, outside of Spartanburg County

Something New about You - This Girlology workshop is a great way for girls and their moms to begin a discussion that will ease the transition into puberty. Through very interactive activities and discussions, this workshop offers age-appropriate, medically-accurate information about puberty, including growth and development, nutrition, exercise, skin care, hygiene, and of course, menstruation and menstrual hygiene products. This class does not cover sex or reproduction. Each girl will receive the book, Something New About You, at the workshop. For more information, visit www.girlology.com.
